What is Mevagissey Shanty Festival?

The Mevagissey Shanty Festival celebrates traditional sea shanties, maritime music, and folklore.

 

Where and when does the festival take place?

The festival takes place on Friday 16 October – Sunday 18 October 2026. There is a fundraising Gala Night on Thursday 15 October 2026.

It is very easy to walk around the venues in Mevagissey, the Mevagissey Activity Centre is on the edge of the village but less than 10 minutes walk from the harbour.

We have a shuttle bus running between Mevagissey and Pentewan on Friday night and all day/evening on Saturday. The venues in Pentewan are very close together. The Ship Inn and Into the Woods are in the centre of the village and Hubbox is in the Pentewan campsite.

Is there an admission fee?

All performances are free of charge. Please make a donation in the collection buckets to help with costs.

What kind of music can I expect?

You can expect traditional sea shanties, maritime folk songs, and nautical music performed by choirs, bands, and solo musicians.

Can I bring children to the festival?

Yes! The festival is family-friendly, and we have activities and performances suitable for all ages.

Is there parking available?
  1. The Harbour Car Park by the Lighthouse. A short level walk to the centre of the festival.

  1. Willow Car Park which is the large car park on the left hand side as you enter Mevagissey.

  1. Cornwall Council Car Park on River Street.

  1. Cornwall Council Car Park on Church Street.

  1. Sunny Corner Car park, opposite St. Andrew’s Church on the One Way System.
Where can I find a public toilet
Public Toilets in Mevagissey
 
West Wharf toilets on the harbour will be open until 6pm on Friday and Saturday evenings.
 
Valley Road toilets will remain open until 10pm on Friday and Saturday evening.
 
These toilets are wholly funded by the residents of Mevagissey and the festival is paying for the later opening times, please use them with respect.
Are food and drinks available at the festival?

Most venues will be serving food, many offer a reduced festival menu due to high demand. There is also a fish grill by the entrance to the main marquee on the harbour.

Can I bring my own food and drinks?

You will not be able to consume your own food and drink in the venues but there is outdoor seating around the harbour.

Is the festival wheelchair accessible?

Many of the venues and the marquee are wheelchair friendly but one or two do have stepped access.

Can I bring my pet?

Venues and the marquee welcome dogs but please be aware that they will be crowded with visitors enjoying the performances.

How can I participate as a performer?

Registration for the 2025 festival is on our website www.mevashantyfest.co.uk and this will open in early 2025. Announcements are made on our Facebook page.

Are there merchandise stalls?

Merchandise is available in the marquee on the harbour.

What should I wear?

There’s no specific dress code, dress for the weather and have fun! Some people do like to attend in maritime themed costume.

Will the festival still happen if it rains?

All venues are inside or undercover so we will not cancel.

How can I stay updated on festival news?

Please follow our Facebook page and check the website for updates.

Health and Safety

Our official festival volunteers are dressed in red T Shirts with Crew on the back, please ask one of them if you require assistance. First Aid provision is provided by St John Ambulance.

Food & Essential Shops in Mevagissey

There are two food shops in Mevagissey; Moore’s is a well stocked shop selling fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy and deli products. They stock a wide range of Cornish food and well worth a visit.

Mevagissey Stores is a convenience store selling a wide range of food products, confectionery, alcoholic and soft drinks plus cleaning materials. They offer a post office counter and cashpoint service.

Boots the chemist is located next to the Ship Inn in the centre of the village.

I'm a Performer - Where's the Green Room?

The Green Room is situated in the Mevagissey Jubilee Hall, next to St Andrew’s Church on Chapel Street PL26 6SS 

From the Willow Car Park, walk into the village and turn left into Chapel Square, walk nearly to the end and turn right into Chapel Street and the hall is on your right.

From the centre of the village the best landmark is the War Memorial, walk past the War Memorial on your left up Church Street, take second on left into Chapel Street and it is along there on left hand side.
