Following a casual gathering of musical friends to sing traditional Christmas Carols about twenty years ago, The Township Waits hailing from Witney began singing in all sorts of settings throughout the year. Waits is an old term for musicians or minstrels associated with a place and reflects the band’s folk roots in their vernacular delivery. Their songs feature many expressions from well-known classics to more obscure offerings even, despite Witney’s distance from the sea, shanty and sea-faring arrangements! Audiences are usually encouraged to sing along – particularly as the band often say, ‘if you sing the same song as us!’
